Rationale and Poster Wall

Final Lesson

Today a group of us put our A2 prints of our poster on the wall and critiqued everyones. My critique was :
-need to make the laptop brighter still (as print out much darker than on screen)
-Stalking 's' can be in lower case as it's the same sentence
- bottom right tagline could be bigger maybe

I made these changes and went to go print. Sadly something went wrong with the printing so I had to re format my printing and then it worked so yay.

I also put my poster onto the poster wall which was the wrong kind of wall for me because my poster is landscape so I had to make the sizing quite large compared to the other posters.

I am very pleased with the print and how it came out, I printed A1, 200gsm, satin gloss. Then trimmed it down to A2 because I had an image right to the ends.

This is my final image:

Final Two

I put my final two ideas on facebook for further feedback and people liked the tissue one much better even though they said that masks had improved it didn't have the same level of impact. This lead to a concern that because this idea was thought so far back in the process would it be okay to use an idea that was from before after I've developed so many other possibilities.

This was a question for my tutors, I asked two of them today the same question and they said it was fine and what sometimes has to happen in the design process. So I am going with the tissue idea and the tutor suggested I changed the heading it make the space from line 1 to line 2 smaller for better reading so the gap isn't as big and then the text isn't as disconnected. Also to change the tag line from 'privacy settings.use them' to 'use your privacy settings' and use italics so it was calling people to action.
This is the poster with those changes also with the change in the photo as I wanted to make the laptop more obvious to connect it with the internet and social media:

Text Change

I changed the top of the text a few times to see what would look better, I like the middle one the best because of the spacing between the lines and the white colour makes the heading pop as well as a different font choice

Background iterations

I have 4 iterations for my background for the masks.
The first I can't see the type so I need to change the type to white.
The second I have white type which is easier to see however it gets lost in too much texture. I'm thinking this background is too dark
The third looks nice but what's it relating to? Who are those people what can I do to relate the background to them?
The fourth was binary code as in internet and computer but it's still not really relevant

I went on to think about who these people were or what kind of people I was trying to say search for people on the internet. I thought of prison and looked up some imagery before I came up with the idea of barbed wire. I illustrated barbed wire so that it gave a prison feel as if that's where these people had come from. I also thought that because the masks were in front it showed that nothing could stop them physically, meaning that the privacy settings kept you safe virtually.

Four Possibilities

These are my top 4 developments.
I am not going with the 'he finished' written in lotion because it's the weakest of the 4. I put up the other three on facebook to get feedback and people liked the tissue one and thought the mask one was better but needed a different background. So I will explore backgrounds and someone suggested making 'he finished' bigger so the title was more obvious and to lighten the laptop so you could see it better. So now I'm down to decided between the two so I will work on both of them and put them up on facebook again to get further feedback from my peers

Type

I am playing around with the fonts for my mask picture and the spacing of my heading and tagline.
I decided to go with the bottom left as it seemed balanced and was pleasing to the eye.

Photography Shots

I went back to the ideas with my photo shoot in the dark as the poster image.

These are my strongest from the photo shoot.
The 'he finished' was written with lotion to have connotations of semen and enforce the pun of 'he finished' However I don't like how messy it looks and the photo doesn't look good in black and white or in colour, also the rest of the text is lost. I don't like the layout even though the message it quite strong.
The group of three tissues is too much like a spotlight rather than a dodgy lit place. Also the text layout doesn't work with the image, the image focus seems to be too small and the negative space isn't effective in this layout.
The strongest is the bottom one with one tissue. It got the best response with critique from my peers saying they felt 'creeped out' and 'it makes me really think about changing my privacy settings' which is exactly the response I want. I need to work on the type a little and also see how it prints e.g. if it's too dark.

Playing around with ideas

I have been playing around with the mask idea and seeing what layout works best, looking at different taglines and text combinations as well as trying out cropping and multiplying the imagery of the mask to get the strongest effect.
These are the stages of my development, minor changes are in my book. I started with one mask and then decided to make it two people, showing you can't know for sure who you are talking to online and you can't tell who is a friend and who is a foe. I changed my type font to make it more authoritative and a sense of elegance that flowed with the imagery of the masks better. I also changed the background because the crinkled paper didn't really seem to relate at all to my imagery or message. So I will explore backgrounds.

Going Back

I decided to rekindle my old ideas as I felt the mask wasn't maybe as strong as I intended it to be.

I explored options with my glasses illustration as this seemed more friendly and had the cliche of being the glasses that everyone uses for a disguise in movies and now parodies because they are so obvious. I cropped and enlarged the image and played around with the layout only to find that one of my original layouts was the strongest.
I also played with the idea of the stalkers notebook, coming from my typography idea that just had no impact and the story was lost because it had no context. So I thought having a file on a person and crossing things they wanted to do to them off their list would evoke feelings from the audience that would make them want to be more careful online and with the information they put online. However, I ended up making something that looked very chaotic and messy and not very clear at all. So I dropped this idea.

I also re-visted my blue face. I dropped this previously because I couldn't get the layout to work or make the message clear. I wanted to try again so I tried out a few more layout options. I simplified my text heading, however I feel the text at the bottom is still lost and irrelevant. There was too much space which wasn't working with this concept at all and everything I tried it just looked really visually wrong and I don't think my idea was very clear either and the illustration wasn't that great.

Today's Class

Today I got feedback from two tutors on my new glasses poster.
Patricia seemed to think that a white mask would be better because anyone could use that identity and Lee suggested that I choose which one I thought was more appropriate as the glasses were a funnier approach whereas the white mask was a more mysterious approach.

I think I will go with the white mask even though I really like the glasses approach because of the illustration and colour and cliche of the typical disguise which is so easy to spot. I am choosing the white mask because it represents more dangerous people, they are used for robberies and hostage situations when people want to hide their identity so well they literally 'could be anyone' and that's my message for the poster is anyone could be anyone online so you should be careful and only talk to people you are certain you know. To stop these people reaching you, use your privacy settings.

Using a Harry Potter Reference

Typography Examples

Latest Ideas

My latest ideas are the tissues and lotion pictures taken in the dark with a torch being the only light source. I wanted to create a creepy, disturbing vibe and this lighting helped to achieve that.

I also wanted to try something illustrative and something to do with type.

So I created a poster with a face screaming on it, layered to deform the face and it was supposed to be like a distorted face, almost like a mask telling people that not everyone online is who they say they are. I tried different colours and got feedback today saying the blue background is better, although the layout of the text is confusing and not very visually appealing to read or look at. I will see if improving the text layout makes a different. It was even suggested to have the conversation between the stranger and 'you' in the middle of the page.

The typography poster was voted to be better with both black and white text as it was visually more interesting to look at. Everyone was very scared by the idea and said they felt 'put off'. I am going to pursue this typography poster further by looking u[p typography examples to see if I can make it more visually rhetoric because to me, it just looks like a text poster rather than anything visually clever.

I decided not to go with the stalk idea because the audience is parents or much younger internet users, therefore if would be irrelevant because the target audience is supposed to be people of our age.

Following an Idea

I'm trying to find facts and statistics but also true stories that I can put as a chilling feature in my poster. I wanted to maybe do something that was juxtaposition. A calm, pastel coloured illustration of a stalk carrying a baby showing that online 'stalkers' target people as young as 12 online for things like sexual abuse, rape and murder. I wanted to have this calm relatable image and have the fact at the bottom to throw people off and it's a play on the image and what the image might actually be showing. So like a double meaning.
However, the target audience is supposed to be people of our age and I feel like it's telling young people to be careful or parents to mind their kids. So I am going to explore other options too and talk to my tutors to see if the idea is acceptable even thought the target audience might be different.
Or I could alter the message about how people pretend to be different ages to make it relevant to our age group.

Research

I'm trying to research more into my topic because my ideas just don't feel that strong. I need to maybe expand my idea through the medium I'm using because I'm thinking in only a photographic approach and I need to think, what if I can use other approaches, will this make it more interesting or open up other possibilities. Not sure if my idea is solid yet so I am researching and exploring further to try and make my idea clearer. So hopefully I will get there if I keep trying. I need to really think about what I could do and what my approach is and my message.
I'm moving away from my tagline to try and see what else I can come up with because I think I have restricted myself

Developing Finals

Upon making the interim decisions I am going ahead with the privacy setting design. I am going to experiment with different ways I can communicate the idea and will be using google images to get an idea before deciding my approach and then of course using my own sourced material to create iterations of the poster

Interim

I thought interim was very usual . The feedback enabled me to see what were my strongest ideas and it was great to have people who didn't know what my idea was so I could see if it was working or not or if it was even being communicated.

The two strongest were apparently the stripper posters and the privacy settings poster. People had an immediate reaction to the privacy settings poster, they were very creeped out and felt exposed, they even began discussing what their privacy settings were. This was a great response because people saw the poster, understood, felt a reaction and then began discussion to spread the message. I think it was effective but still at very early stages with improvements to be made.

For one, they didn't all get the double meaning in "he just finished. Stalking your bikini pictures'.
I originally had 'He finished. Stalking your bikini pictures' but I thought that was so creepy and I didn't feel right about presenting it, so I changed the words. But I think I need that feeling of creepiness to really capture the audience and make them think, 'ew, yes people actually do that.'

Another great thing was that a student passing by the table spotted the poster and read it and reacted saying it was 'really clever' and 'hard out' and it made them shiver, this was a boy's reaction so even he could get the same violated feeling even though he isn't a girl.

The stripper girl had two taglines:
'back in my day you had to pay for a stripper' and 'I like your personalitits.' People laughed at the first and then said 'oooh burn, taking a stab' at the second. However it was discussed and decided that the 'back in my day..' phrase was more effected and got across the message more clearly.

The other two were sort of disregarded almost immediately because the strength wasn't that great. I feel like the 'LOL' was misrepresented so I want to trial it before I discard it completely.

Visual Rhetoric

I made a brainstorm of all the key words from my research and tried to explore other ideas. From this I highlighted the strongest ideas and thumbnailed them out. A ideas came from this that I'd like to push.

So I watched the power of words video which I thought was very powerful and shows how carefully choosing words can make all the difference.
I choose 4 statements that I wanted to make, one for each poster and decided to try and say the statement but in as few words as possible and make it powerful.

With these words in mind I tried to work on the image with more thumbnails and then decided to try it digitally and created 4 rough posters for interim.

VISUAL RHETORIC

Big Mac

Generation Like

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/generation-like/

I watched Generation Like, a documentary about the younger generation and social media.

It was interesting because it seemed to be aimed at parents and the older generation, almost trying to explain to them what it all means. Which is funny because to kids it's recreational more than anything.

Most of the points I agreed with such as likes make you feel 'empowered' and better about yourself. Also how hard it is to become famous and what you have to do to get there. However, I didn't realise how structured to marketing schemes were for movies and products through social media, I see through a lot of their adverts as I think most people do because we know better, but I didn't realise it was down to every hour what they would release. I believe they only have control of the process of becoming famous and getting likes up to a certain point until it's the audience and the viewers that take over the marketing themselves.

I loved the fact that Tyler Oakley was in the video, it made me smile because I watch YouTubers and everyone wants to be a famous youtuber I mean who wouldn't, you get free stuff and money for doing what you love. But the pressure of people liking you or not, failing or succeeding stops a lot of people from pursuing the youtube career. People who watch youtube do feel like the youtuber is their friend because it's more of an intimate relationship and you feel like they are just chatting with you in your room like a friend would, so they seem way more approachable in real life because they are on the same level as you, where as hollywood celebrities seem untouchable. I felt happy to see Tyler doing this and I think it's so interesting to see how fascinated the older generation was about his life and what he's done. It's so much simpler than they all think.

Also I found it interesting that some kids are being misrepresented because it's never like those kids all sat round the table on facebook together. You are at your house alone on facebook. Plus I've never heard of making over someone's profile because no-one else would care what picture you chose. Everyone just cares about their own profile

I felt like I was watching more of a brand and marketing video than a social media video because I feel like they didn't explore the other aspects of social media and likes such as what other people think about you, and why you want certain people to see you do something online.
